How Sports Equipment Can Transform Schools and Community Parks

Posted by Churchich Content Team Content on August 18, 2025

In towns and cities across North and South Carolina, well-designed sports facilities do more than provide a place to play — they help shape healthier, stronger, and more connected communities.

From basketball and volleyball courts to soccer fields to inclusive fitness stations and adaptive equipment, the right investments in recreation can spark lasting benefits for children, families, and neighborhoods alike.

Sports and recreation facilities can become powerful drivers of wellness when they are thoughtfully planned, equipped with high-quality products, and designed for broad accessibility. They not only give children and teens opportunities to develop physical skills but also foster lifelong habits, build confidence, and strengthen community ties.

When schools and municipalities commit to adding or upgrading sports equipment, they’re also investing in:

  • Healthier lifestyles: Encouraging more active play, exercise, and outdoor time.
  • Youth development: Supporting teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
  • Social connection: Creating inclusive gathering spaces where all ages can interact.
  • Community pride: Giving residents facilities they can enjoy and share for years.

To see the results in action, we only must look at communities that have transformed underused, outdated spaces into vibrant recreation hubs.

A Real-World Example of Lasting Impact

The power of sports equipment and its benefit to children’s health and well-being is best seen through a real-world transformation story.

One example comes from a school playground that underwent a complete makeover a decade ago.

“In the spring of 2014, the community replaced the run-down equipment, installing a spider web–like climbing net, twisting slides, and colorful swings,” wrote Emily Anthes in Science News. “A new basketball court went in, along with a grassy play area and walking paths. Kids got access to balls, Hula-Hoops, and other loose equipment.”

Research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) found remarkable results: the percentage of children participating in vigorous physical activity tripled — and those gains lasted over time.

Elena Kuo, a senior evaluation and learning consultant at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, said that overhauling playgrounds to encourage active play is gaining momentum and that playgrounds offer a chance to encourage kids to be more active in their everyday lives.

“You’ve got a captive audience and a lot of kids,” said Kuo, who co-authored the study published in the AJPM. “Even something as simple as having a bunch of balls available and having Frisbees around — it’s just more fun than a random open field.”

Kuo’s study is backed by other research including a study in Los Angeles County that found students' moderate to physical activity at 19 schools was 10 to 20 percentage points higher in areas with loose equipment, and a Colorado study in two school districts that demonstrated that the more play equipment schools provided, the bigger activity gains.

At Churchich Recreation and Design, we see these kinds of results as proof that investing in high-quality sports facilities and equipment can do more than upgrade a space — it can change lives.

Ball Sports: Foundation of Active Play

Ball sports like basketball, soccer, and volleyball are more than just fun games — they’re foundational activities that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and cognitive development.

Paige Maslen, in The Social and Academic Benefits of Team Sports, notes that team sports not only improve physical health but also enhance mental skills like strategic thinking, focus, and emotional resilience.

Soccer Essentials

  • Regulation-size goals (portable or fixed systems) built for durability.
  • High-quality soccer balls and training cones for drills.
  • Fields maintained for safe play, whether for PE classes or weekend leagues.

Basketball Basics

  • Smooth, well-marked courts with durable baskets and backboards.
  • Adjustable-height systems to accommodate all ages and skill levels.

Volleyball Versatility

  • Sturdy nets with well-defined court boundaries.
  • Adaptable setups for indoor gyms, blacktop courts, or sandy community areas.

Adding these facilities to schoolyards, parks, or community centers provides opportunities for both organized play and casual, drop-in games.

Fitness and Training: Building Confidence and Strength

Outdoor fitness equipment has surged in popularity, offering opportunities for people of all ages to get active in a fresh-air setting.

Popular outdoor fitness additions:

  • Fitness Stations: Pull-up bars, sit-up benches, and multi-use resistance machines for full-body workouts.
  • Climbing Elements: Boulders, walls, and nets that develop strength, agility, and problem-solving skills.
  • Balance and Agility Courses: Obstacle layouts that build coordination and add an element of friendly competition.

These installations are equally effective for school PE programs and public parks, where they encourage lifelong healthy habits.

Sports for Everyone: Inclusive Play

True community wellness is only possible when everyone can participate. Inclusive sports design ensures that children and adults of all abilities have the opportunity to be active.

Inclusive sports design ideas:

  • Multi-Sport Courts: Flexible layouts for basketball, pickleball, tennis, futsal, or other games in one shared space.
  • Interactive Play Systems: Technology-enhanced games that adapt to various ability levels.
  • Adaptive Equipment: Wheelchair-accessible play structures, specialized swings, and sensory-rich play panels.

Inclusive spaces encourage empathy, social connection, and a sense of belonging across the entire community.

The Far-Reaching Benefits of the Right Sports Equipment

Investing in well-built, thoughtfully designed sports facilities benefits far more than just the athletes using them.

  1. Elevating Performance and Skill Development
Quality surfaces, safe equipment, and proper sizing allow players to focus on improving their skills rather than navigating unsafe or outdated gear.
  2. Prioritizing Safety
Impact-absorbing surfaces, well-spaced equipment, and durable construction reduce the risk of injury for both casual and competitive players.
  3. Fostering Community Engagement
Modern, attractive facilities draw people in — becoming social hubs where friendships form, families gather, and community pride grows.
  4. Promoting Health and Wellness
Easy access to fitness opportunities encourages regular physical activity, which supports heart health, muscle development, and mental well-being.
