Hilton Head Island, SC – August 22, 2024 – Churchich Recreation is excited to announce its collaboration with Best Buddies and other community partners to bring Hilton Head’s first fully inclusive playground to Shelter Cove Community Park. This groundbreaking project aims to provide a play space where children of all abilities can play together, fostering a sense of inclusion and connection.

The playground, located in the heart of Shelter Cove, features adaptive play equipment designed to be accessible for children with physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges. Inclusive swings, sensory elements, and play structures tailored to various mobility needs ensure that every child can enjoy a fun and enriching play experience alongside their peers.

Churchich Recreation, a leader in creating inclusive recreational spaces, worked closely with Best Buddies, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, they’ve developed a playground that goes beyond fun – it’s a space that promotes socialization, development, and friendship.

“We are proud to partner with Best Buddies on this exciting project,” said Sue Churchich at Churchich Recreation. “This playground is a testament to our commitment to creating spaces where children of all abilities can come together, interact, and form lasting friendships.”

Best Buddies has been instrumental in advocating for the project, helping ensure that the design supports the organization’s mission of inclusion for people with disabilities. By integrating accessible play structures and sensory features, the playground promotes an environment where every child can thrive.

The Town Council of Hilton Head, The Sandbox Children’s Museum, local donors, and Best Buddies have worked together to fund and support this effort. The new playground will serve as a gathering place for families, creating opportunities for children to build friendships, develop motor skills, and engage with their community.
